Flags

Australia is so lucky to have so many amazing flags. In our school and in lots of buildings around the country there are three flags.

The Australian flag

The Australian flag is our national flag featuring the stars of the Southern Cross, one big star (the Commonwealth star) and the Union Jack in the left hand corner. 

The Aboriginal flag

The colours are symbolic. Red on the bottom represents the earth, Yellow in the middle for the sun and black on the top for the people. 

The Torres Strait Islander flag

Again the colours have meaning. Green represents the land, blue for the water (the Torres Strait islands are in the far north of Australia. The black represents the people and there is a white dhari (traditional hat for dancers) and five pointed star symbolising peace and cultural unity.
