Year 1 Spotlight

In Year 1, we have been learning all about where food comes from and the changes it goes through before it reaches us. We visited Myuna Farm as part of our Farm to Fork topic in the Inquiry Unit How We Organise Ourselves where we experienced farm processes firsthand. We fed animals and looked at where they lived to survive and even got to milk a goat!

In the classroom, we built on the knowledge we gained from our Myuna Farm trip by exploring the changes food goes through before it arrives at our tables. We investigated the journey of milk – from the farm to us – and explored how chocolate is made from cocoa beans. We read books about the five food groups. Learned the difference between processed and unprocessed foods, and which one is healthier.

Myuna Farm

Raphael - Going to Myuna farm was so cool because we got to see lots of animals.

Kobe: I liked playing with the bunnies. They were soft and fluffy. I also liked seeing the goats being milked.

Lia - I liked to pat the bunnies

Sky - I loved the camel when we said "kush" it sat. Her name is Alice

Flynn: I liked the train because it was bumpy and fun. We also saw lots of bats that are endangered.

Processed Foods Activity

Hugo: It was good. Some foods are processed and some aren't, like milk is not but ice-cream is.

Georgie: I liked learning about how to make bread. I like to make my bread into toast.

Toby: I like comparing the foods grown on plants to food we get from animals.

Bella: I liked learning about how chocolate is made. I would like to try and make chocolate at home.
