Term 4 Mathematics Overview

Welcome back to Term 4!

As we head into the final term of the school year, our teaching team continues to focus on pragmatic, high-impact strategies that promote deep mathematical reasoning and inquiry-based learning.

When students actively engage with meaningful mathematical tasks, their positive growth and confidence reinforce effective learning habits. Our goal across every grade level is to build deep conceptual understanding through hands-on, practical problem-solving that connects key theories directly to real-world classroom experiences.

Term 4 Focus Topics by Year Level

  • Prep: Students will dive into Data (collecting and representing simple information), explore foundational ideas of Sharing and Grouping (building early concepts of division and multiplication), navigate spatial relationships through Location, and continue strengthening their core Counting and Place Value skills.

  • Year 1: Learning will center on Data collection and interpretation, directional language in Location, understanding Time, identifying properties of Shape, and deepening mental strategies for Addition and Subtraction, finishing with structured Consolidation and Revision.

  • Year 2: Focus will be on applying flexible mental and written strategies across all Operations, gathering and reading Data, using map skills for Location, identifying rules in Patterns, and completing end-of-year Revision.

  • Year 3: Students will extend their understanding of Addition and Subtraction, conduct hands-on Data Investigations, explore spatial pathways in Location, investigate Probability and chance, build fluency with Multiplication and Division, and measure Mass and Capacity, before engaging in comprehensive Revision.

  • Year 4: Learning will cover conducting Data experiments, analyzing the properties of 3D Objects, exploring Probability, honing efficient strategies for Multiplication and Division, measuring Mass and Capacity, and consolidating key skills during Revision.

  • Year 5: Upper primary mathematicians will engage in rich Data Investigations, deepen their understanding of proportional reasoning through Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, and build fluency and problem-solving skills across all numerical Operations.

  • Year 6: Students will wrap up their primary mathematics journey with real-world Data Investigations, connections between Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, essential skills in Financial Maths, advanced multi-step Operations, and interactive consolidation using Prodigy.

Like last term, we will have a spotlight of learning on each year level throughout the term. Next week we will kick off with the Preps.
