October: The Month of the Holy Rosary
October holds a special place in the Catholic Church as the Month of the Holy Rosary, a time when Catholics around the world are encouraged to pray the Rosary and reflect on the life of Jesus through the eyes of His mother, Mary. This month is particularly significant because the Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on 7 October.
The history of this special devotion dates back to 1571, when Pope St Pius V called upon Christians throughout Europe to pray the Rosary before the Battle of Lepanto. Following the victory of the Christian fleet on 7 October, the Pope gave thanks to God, recognising the power of prayer and Mary's intercession. The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was established to commemorate this event. Centuries later, Pope Leo XIII encouraged Catholics to dedicate the entire month of October to the Rosary, establishing a tradition that continues today.
What is the Holy Rosary and why do we pray it?
The Rosary is much more than a series of repeated prayers. It is a beautiful way to pray, reflect and grow closer to Jesus. As we pray the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be, we are invited to slow down, quiet our hearts and meditate on important moments in Jesus' life. Mary accompanies us in this prayer, helping us to understand her Son's love, His teachings and His great sacrifice for us.
The Rosary is divided into four sets of mysteries: the Joyful Mysteries, which reflect on the birth and childhood of Jesus; the Luminous Mysteries, which focus on His public ministry; the Sorrowful Mysteries, which recall His suffering and death; and the Glorious Mysteries, which celebrate His Resurrection and the glory of heaven. Together, these mysteries take us on a journey through the Gospel and remind us of God's great love for humanity.
Pope St John Paul II described the Rosary as one of his favourite prayers, explaining that it allows us to “meditate with Mary upon the mysteries” of Christ's life. Through this prayer, we learn from Mary's example of faith, trust and obedience to God.
How can we bring the Rosary into our lives?
October provides a wonderful opportunity for our school community to rediscover the beauty of this traditional Catholic prayer. Last year through the generous donations of our school and Parish community, we were able to secure class sets of Rosary Beads for students to use during prayer times. It is wonderful to see even the youngest of our students leading their classmates through a decade of the Rosary. Families might choose to pray a decade of the Rosary together, reflect on one of the mysteries with their children, or say a Hail Mary for someone who needs comfort, healing or support. Even a few quiet moments spent in prayer can help us turn our hearts towards God.
Whole School Rosary
On Monday the 26th of October, we will gather in the Church to pray the Rosary together. Families and friends are more than welcome to attend from 2.40 onwards.
As we continue to live out this year's school theme, “Christ Beside Us – Walking in the Footsteps of St Patrick,” the Rosary reminds us that we are never alone on our journey of faith. Mary gently leads us towards Jesus, encouraging us to follow His example through our kindness, compassion, forgiveness and love for others.
This October, may we take time to pray, reflect and grow in faith, asking Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary, to pray for us and our school community as we strive each day to walk more closely with her Son.
Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us!
