Year 12 Vocational Major Literacy Excursion
Students met in the city to explore the State Library paying close attention to the Ned Kelly Armour held there and the information supplied. Then, travelling the long tram ride up Sydney Road we approached the gates of Pentridge Prison. Inside, we explored the Burials and Bones exhibition and visited H Block in the old Pentridge Prison.
The students were given a guided tour and then used the interactive audio experience within H Block to self-guide around the spaces, hearing stories from both guards and inmates.
Back in class, students have been required to correlate the information they gained on a selected aspect of the excursion and complete further research to create an informative handout or museum plaque using tools of text organisation and presentation. They also produced a written evaluation of how the experience of being on site and seeing objects in person equates to gathering online information.
“The tour of Pentridge prison was very engaging and an invaluable source of information. Seeing the prison cells and walls and feeling the cold and sadness of the spaces helped to picture and visualise what had happened at Pentridge and gave a sense of depth that reading an article couldn’t give. The audio guide and hearing the voices and stories of former inmates also made it more engaging. “
