Year 3

We all say ‘Yippee’ for being in 3A, 3B and 3C!
What an amazing start to the year we have had in Year 3! The settling in and realisation for the students that they are now in the Middle School has made a positive effect on their approaches to the school expectations and their learning!
A big factor of Year 3 is NAPLAN and the students have already completed 2 of the tests so far, Writing and Reading, with 2 more to go next week, Language Conventions and Numeracy. They have demonstrated a lot of resilience in tackling this new challenge and keep impressing us with their determination to do their best!
During English this term, students have worked their way through a variety of texts that both celebrate and commemorate significant days and events that have shaped our nation. A heavy emphasis has been on the Aboriginal Australian people and their history previous to Europeans arriving. We have also explored what has changed since the arrival of Europeans and the impact on the Indigenous Australians way of life. We have looked into commemoration days like Sorry Day, Freedom Day and learned about famous Aboriginal Australian people and their achievements. We have completed some terrific writing responses and narratives as the students continue consolidating their skills and stamina! We have also been working through building our reading abilities through daily fluency practice and learning about the parts of words and their meanings through our Word Origins program.
In Numeracy, we have focussed on a range of skills like addition and subtraction, length, odd and even numbers and Space - 2D shapes and 3D objects. The students have experienced a range of activities that have both stretched and expanded their knowledge and skills of working with both numbers and math strategies.
During our Social and Emotional Learning sessions, we have been working to develop our strategies and knowledge about how to be Ready to Learn and identifying what makes us feel safe and people we feel safe with. The students have also been guided through our new Behaviour Expectations Matrix to really unpack and understand each component of our School Values.
In Year 3 Sport, we have been really enjoying our house based challenges with everyone working together in our houses to try and get the points each week. We have played games that include hungry hippos, silent mats and the hula challenge. Most recently we have been working on our beach volleyball skills!
A fantastic term so far from all of our students and they all should be very proud of their efforts.
We look forward to all of the learning we will explore in the last 3 weeks of the term!
