Year 5 – New Signs Are Up!

In our School unit, Year 5 students have learnt Chinese vocabulary for people at school and different school facilities. They have also practised using their laptops to type Chinese characters.

Bringing together their language learning, creativity and technology skills, students designed a brand-new set of bilingual facility signs and have proudly put them up around our school.

As you walk around the school, keep an eye out for these new signs! Each one features a blue-and-white porcelain-inspired frame, with thoughtful decorations designed by students to reflect the purpose of each facility.

It is wonderful to see students applying their Chinese learning beyond the classroom and making a meaningful contribution to our school environment.

Year 4 – Shuttlecock Challenge!

In our Sports unit, Year 4 students have learnt Chinese vocabulary for a variety of sports and leisure activities, as well as sentence structures to express their preferences. Students were also guided to dive deeper into the construction of Chinese characters through learning about radicals and discovering how they can provide clues to meaning.

In this unit, students were encouraged to get up from their seats and step outside the classroom to experience a traditional Chinese activity – shuttlecock kicking, 踢毽子 (tī jiàn zi)!

This hands-on activity connected language learning with cultural understanding, giving students the opportunity to learn by doing. While practising their shuttlecock skills, students challenged themselves to keep the shuttlecock in the air and discovered that 踢毽子 requires plenty of coordination, concentration, and persistence!

It was wonderful to see students learning Chinese through movement, play and cultural experience. 

How many kicks can you do without letting the shuttlecock touch the ground?
