Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week
Students, Rhylan, Conan and Archie, have made a video explaining the meaning of Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week which will be played during the assembly on Friday 23rd May. A copy of their information is below:
National Sorry Day, officially the National Day of Healing, is an event held annually in Australia on 26 May commemorating the Stolen Generations. It is part of the ongoing efforts towards reconciliation for all Australians.
National Reconciliation Week is celebrated each year from 27th May to 3rd June. It is a time to celebrate and build on positive and respectful relationships and connections between Australians and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
27th May: This marks the 1967 referendum when more than 90% of Australians voted ‘yes’ to count Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people into the census.
3rd June: This marks the 1992 ‘native title’ Mabo decision. It recognised that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had rights over their land. This is now known as Mabo Day.
The Reconciliation Week 2025 theme, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future. Bridging Now to Next calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.
