Hello from the Autism Inclusion Teacher

Understanding and Responding to School Anxiety

At our last “coffee and chat” we touched upon “school can’t” so I have dedicated this newsletter article to this subject.

While school can be challenging for many children, it may feel especially overwhelming for neurodiverse students, including those on the autism spectrum. These students may experience heightened anxiety due to factors such as sensory sensitivities, social and communication differences, and unexpected changes in routine. This can sometimes lead to school avoidance or refusal, with a strong preference to stay at home, something that can be distressing for both the child and their family.

Recognising the signs of anxiety and understanding how it may affect a student’s behaviour and well-being is essential for both educators and parents. When we identify and address these needs early, we can work together to provide the reassurance and support children need to feel safe and engaged at school.

There are some practical ways families can help:

  • Establish a home routine. Creating a consistent daily routine at home can complement the school routine.
  • Practise social skills. Encourage social interactions through playdates or activities that involve cooperative play. These opportunities can help your child build and practice social skills.
  • Celebrate achievements. Recognise and celebrate your child’s achievements, no matter how small. Positive reinforcement can boost their self-esteem.
  • Talk through the school day in advance to build understanding.
  • Support self-advocacy. As your child grows, encourage them to advocate for themselves and communicate their needs with their teachers and peers.
  • Use visual tools like schedules or social stories to prepare for transitions.
  • Visit the school during quieter times to reduce sensory overload.
  • Include a comfort item in your child’s bag to provide familiarity.
  • Collaborate closely with educators to share insights and adjust strategies as needed.

Together, families and schools can create inclusive, supportive environments where every child, regardless of how they experience the world, feels valued, understood, and ready to learn.
