Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden
2026

Spring has arrived in the Kitchen Garden, bringing warmer weather, new growth and plenty of exciting cooking! Our students have been busy developing their cooking skills, making delicious cheesy veggie scrolls and Vegemite scrolls, as well as preparing a variety of tasty main meals, dips and fresh salads.
We have also been busy in the garden, planting new seedlings and getting our garden beds ready for the warmer months ahead. It has been wonderful to see the students getting their hands in the soil and watching our garden come to life.
A very big thank you to our wonderful volunteers who have generously given their time to help in the kitchen and garden: Melissa (Madison’s Mum), Sharu (Sienna’s Mum), Barbara (Harvey’s Mum), Loli (Cyrus’s Mum) and Brian (Jacob’s Dad). Your help makes such a difference to our program, and we are so grateful for your support!
We are looking forward to a wonderful spring of growing, cooking, learning and, of course, eating!
Bon Appétit!

This week, the Zucchini group was in charge of the salad, the Carrot group was in charge of the main meal, the Tomato group was in charge of the dip, and the Eggplant group made the bread. Today, the salad was a warm potato salad, the main meal was vegetarian sausage rolls, the dip was roasted capsicum dip, and the bread was cheesy Vegemite scrolls. The people in my group were me (Kiara), Sienna, Evelyn, Teddy G, Alessia, Wilson and Jacob.

I made the main meal, which was vegetarian sausage rolls. I did really well and cut up lots of mushrooms into tiny, fine squares. I also helped with the kale and grated carrots with my friend. I brushed, filled and rolled the pastry and helped fill the rolls with everything this week. I had lots of fun! I tried the rolls, and they were pretty good.

Today in our SAKG lesson, our group, the Tomatoes, was cutting carrots and other ingredients because we were making carrots with a creamy sauce. I can tell you the ingredients for our sauce. We used cream, pepper, garlic, carrots and a leafy vegetable. There are four groups: Eggplants, Tomatoes, Broccoli and Carrots.

My group made cheesy Vegemite bread. The ingredients were cheese, Vegemite, flour, milk, butter and salt. The people in my group were Annabeth, Kelly, Luke, Emir and Cyrus. Annabeth and I made gluten-free cheesy Vegemite rolls, while everyone else made non-gluten-free rolls. I am very excited to try a bit of everything, but I am a little scared that it might be bad! I will wait and see when we get to eat it.
Luke
This week in SAKG, my friend Emir Gokeck and I were making bread. First, we put some flour into a metal bowl, then we added milk and stirred it. We added butter and self-raising flour and stirred it all together to make the dough. Then we flattened the dough, spread Vegemite over it, added cheese and rolled it up. We cut it into thin scrolls, added more cheese and put them in the oven.

Today, our Zucchini group made the salad—not just any salad, but one of my favourites: potato salad! The salad consisted of potatoes, peas, olive oil, lemon juice, celery and parsley. First, we got all the ingredients and peeled and chopped the potatoes before putting them in the pot. We also cut the celery and put it in a bowl. One person chopped the parsley, and we added the peas to the celery. Then we had to clean the kitchen. Once we finished, we were done!
Evelyn
Today, I made a salad, which was potato salad. At first, I struggled to peel the potatoes, so an adult helped me. Instead of peeling some of them, I cut them. After that, we cleaned the tables, spoons, forks, knives and lots more. After drying everything, Kiara and I got the frozen peas and poured four cups into a bowl. After that, the whole class started to line up except for the Tomatoes. Teddy G and the other people in my group cut up the celery, and Kiara chopped the parsley. Teddy G and the others also cut up the lemons. The adult put the potatoes in a pot and boiled them. The peas were so cold that even Teddy G was stunned! We had to separate some of the peas because they were stuck together. We cut up the lemons because we had to mix them with the olive oil. It was hard for me to cut and peel the potatoes, but the other things were much easier.
It was very fun, but not as fun as making the bread in Lesson 1. When we finished peeling and cutting the potatoes, there was a big mess! Potato skins were everywhere on the table and even a little bit on the floor. The salad looked very yummy and tasty. The adult's name was Sharu, I think, from what I remember. The potato salad was also very simple, and I didn't expect it to be that simple. We got some salt and pepper, but we didn't use them for some reason. Maybe the adults put them on after we left!
Kelly
Today, I was cooking mashed potatoes. I kind of cut myself while cutting the potatoes, but it was fine. I also helped make the bread, but I can't remember what it was called! First, I put the flour and melted butter in a bowl. The dough felt squishy. We flattened it and put Vegemite on it. It looked a bit like chocolate! After that, I added cheese, but Cyrus wanted to add more and more. I thought he wanted to make a cheese pull or something! We rolled it up, and then I got to cut it into scrolls because we were finished. I also got to help the other team, but Cyrus kept adding more and more cheese! I thought it was too much cheese. After we put it in the oven, I really wanted to eat it!

Today, I made a salad and I was in the Carrot group. I was cutting the ends off the peas, then I got some tools to help make the salad and waited. Miss Kim told me to shade something, and my fingers turned pink. It was hard to get the pink off, and it wouldn't come off! Then we all helped to pack up. After that, Miss Seigert told us that the Zucchini group needed to help.
Madison
I made bread today and helped with most of it. I helped Devon cut the capsicum, and I also helped with the dough.
Sena
This week, we made bread. The ingredients we used today were capsicum, yoghurt, onions and self-raising flour. I was able to cut the capsicum and roll the dough with a rolling pin. I had lots of fun!
