Auslan

Grade 1 and 2

This week, Grade 1 and 2 students will learn how to communicate about their families in Auslan. Students will learn signs for different family members before practising simple questions and responses to find out about each other's families. Grade 2 students will extend their conversations by including numbers to share how many brothers, sisters or other family members they have. Students will also represent their own family through a drawing activity, using familiar signs and modelled phrases to share information about themselves. 

Grade 3 and 4 

This week, Grade 3 and 4 students will develop their conversational Auslan skills by learning how to describe people and communicate about their families. Students will learn descriptive signs relating to appearance and personality, including height, hair, glasses and characteristics such as funny or kind. They will then use these signs to describe family members to a partner and practise asking and responding to questions about their personal worlds. To put their new vocabulary into action, students will play a visual version of Celebrity Heads, using signed clues to describe familiar characters for their classmates to identify.

Grade 5 and 6

This week, Grade 5 and 6 students will explore creative storytelling in Auslan through familiar fairy tales and characters. After viewing a signed story, students will examine how facial expressions, role shift, gestures and body movement are used to bring characters, emotions and actions to life. They will then put their creativity to the test by reimagining a familiar story, changing characters, settings or events to create their own humorous twist. Students will finish by presenting their short signed performances. 

Visual Arts

In the classroom this week...

Prep students will be looking at Kandinsky's continuous circles and recreating their own with their favourite coloured paint sticks. 

Grade 1 students will be adding the final layer to their Father's Day artwork. They will be using oil pastels to draw two monsters (a Dad and a kid!) and incorporate interesting design features and colours. 

Grade 2 students will be continuing their 'Affirmation Paintings'. They will be finishing off their sharpie outlines before adding watercolour to each section.

Grade 3/4 students will be finishing off their ingredients tag to go with their home made sauce for their Father's Day gift. They will then wrap it and create a card to take home for their Dad or special person.

Grade 5 and 6 students will be finishing their Father's Day gift, creating a picasso inspired collage portrait of their Dad or special person. They are focussing on cubism and asymmetry while still finding some elements that represent their Dad to feature.  

🌱 STEM & National Science Week

This week in STEM, all students will be celebrating National Science Week through a hands-on investigation into native seed bombs, exploring the theme “Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All.” 

Grade 1/2 will connect their learning to the needs of living things

Grade 3/4 will explore the differences between native and introduced species. 

Grade 5/6 students will investigate plant adaptations and extreme weather, including how some Australian native plants use smoke as a signal to help trigger seed germination after bushfires.

 Through making and planting our seed bombs, students will discover how science helps us understand, protect and nurture the natural world around us.

Performing Arts

Preps are learning the music and lyrics to their songs in Beauty and the Beast Jr., developing their confidence in singing and performing together. They are also exploring stories and characters through pirate role play, using their voices, movement and imagination to take on different roles and bring ideas to life.

Grade 1 and 2 are learning the music and lyrics to their songs in Beauty and the Beast Jr. As they become more familiar with the songs, students are exploring how singing, movement and expression can communicate character, mood and help tell a story.

Grade 3 and 4 are developing stories for their puppets to perform. Students are creating characters and exploring how voice, movement and focus can communicate their ideas as they plan, rehearse and refine short puppet performances.

Grade 5 and 6 are using the puppets they have made or are making in Art to create a video performance for their current or future buddy. Working in pairs, students are developing characters and using voice, movement, focus and puppetry techniques to plan, rehearse and perform for a younger audience.
