Junior Learning Community

Year 1
Over the past few weeks, our Grade One students have been working incredibly hard across all areas of their learning. In Literacy, we have been exploring new letter sounds, including ay and ai making the long “a” sound, and ee and ea making the long “e” sound. We have also been learning about Nouns and Verbs and their role in a sentence.
In Mathematics, students have been continuing to build their understanding of counting and place value. They have been practising counting different quantities, recording numbers to match, identifying numbers on number lines, creating number bonds, and skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Our next focus in Mathematics will be addition and subtraction.

Year 2
Fete:
Thank you to our families for your kind donations to our class hampers. The baskets look amazing!!! The children are very excited about performing our song at the school fete. Year 2 will be on stage at 10.30 am. We would like all Year 2 students to meet their teachers at the truck at 10.20 am.
Religion:
The students are currently learning about Lent and Easter, and the events of Holy Week. This week we were focusing on the Pillars of Lent (Prayer, Fasting & Almsgiving). All the students reflected on this and were able to write their own Lenten Promise. They wrote about what they could do during Lent to make themselves a better person. There is a photo attached showing you the Year 2 Lenten Chain.
Numeracy:
The students are learning about Addition and Subtraction. Students have been solving problems by using a number line, a tens frame and bridging.
Literacy:
The children have been completing work associated to the story book ‘The Lost Girl.’ They have continued their learning about verbs.
We have had many excited children sharing with us their learning of the Tricky words. These were sent home last week in their Reading folders. These words are connected to your child’s current spelling learning in the classroom and would appreciate your support in supporting your child with this learning. This list will include some new words and will also revise some words from Year 1. We strongly encourage that your child read these words as well as learn to write and spell these words. New lists will be sent home as we reach certain lessons in Literacy. This will be communicated to you via the newsletter.
Inquiry Learning:
We will conclude our History learning by walking to the old school, on Punt Road on Tuesday 31st March at 11.30am, returning to school at 12.30pm. We are sure the students will have lots to share with you after our visit.
With thanks,
Mrs. Nye and Mrs. Hyde.
