Sustainability Team Spring Update

The Sustainability Team has sprung into action this spring! On 7 September, our senior leaders proudly represented Banyule Primary at the 2025 Nillumbik and Banyule Environmental and Climate Action for Kids Conference, held at Edendale Farm. The event was opened by Nillumbik Shire Council Mayor, Councillor John Dumaresq, with 118 students from 14 schools coming together to share ideas and inspiration.

Our leaders were excited to hear about sustainability projects happening at other schools, create magnets using upcycled materials with Imagine Re-Evolution, and enjoyed a powerful Yidaki performance by local Palawa man, Ganga Giri. The day was a fantastic opportunity to learn, connect and bring back fresh ideas for our own school.

September is also Biodiversity Month, and our Sustainability Leaders are joining the national B&B BioBlitz, a citizen science project led by PlantingSeeds. Students will be surveying our school grounds, identifying species, and uploading their findings to iNaturalist. This data contributes directly to CSIRO’s Atlas of Living Australia,

helping scientists understand and protect biodiversity.

To finish off Term 3, our team will lead a Clean Up Australia “Spring Clean” Day across the school. Families spring cleaning at home can also support by recycling items such as broken toys, fabrics/clothing not fit for donation, and soft plastics. These can be dropped off at:

 - Big W – Toys for Joys

 - Upparel

 - Soft Plastic Taskforce - at participating supermarkets
