Year 3 Swimming
This term the Year 3 students have been participating in the Watermarc swim school and water safety program. The students have been working with their swimming instructors to learn and refine their basic swimming skills. They have been learning different swimming strokes such as freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke as well as how to tread water and correct ways to breathe while swimming.
The final session had a water safety focus. With summer coming up, these are skills that the students will likely be using. Students learnt how to tread water, call for help, safely help friends out of a pool and how to use a life jacket, all while having LOTS of fun!
Here are some things the kids had to say about water safety.
“If a boat crashes and you are on it, you need to do a compact jump into the water. It’s like a pin drop but your arms are crossed and you hold your nose” - Katherine L 3DJ
“I learnt that there are different types of jumps for different situations. If you’re jumping in a crowded pool you do a safe entry” - Pia K 3DJ
“I learnt to tread water you need to use your legs lots” - Leo T 3DJ
“To pull a friend out of a pool, you have to get on your tummy so you don’t fall in” - Zoe V 3DJ
"We need to make sure to not run or else you might slip and hurt yourself" - Ethan N 3MT
"Always do safe entry when you go in the water" - Noah P 3MT
"If you are stuck in a rip, just float on your back" - Eva L 3MT
"I learnt how to do a compact jump. You do it when there is water that you can't see how deep it is" - Harry L 3RB
"I learnt how to skull water. It's where you move your hands back and forth and you don't kick" - Rosie 3RB
"We learnt to huddle up instead of spreading out so we can be seen and rescued by a helicopter" - Kyana A 3RB
