Social Media Age Restrictions
As you may be aware, the social media restrictions for under-16s will come into effect on Wednesday, 10 December 2025. From this date, many social media platforms will no longer allow Australian children under the age of 16 to hold an account. The aim of the restrictions is to improve online safety for young people.
It is important to note that compliance with this mandate is the responsibility of the social media services, and parents do not need to delete accounts themselves, but they should be aware and supportive of the delay. This change will not affect any of the College’s learning platforms, information channels or social media groups. At MacKillop Catholic College, we understand that this may cause distress for some of our young people. The eSafety Commissioner has provided several resources on their website to help parents and young people prepare for this transition. These include explanations of the change, resources to assist with preparation, guidance on supporting young people who may struggle, suggestions for ways they can stay connected, and information on how the ban will be implemented. Preparation for the upcoming restrictions are important and Pastoral Care Teachers will be working with their groups on this. Students under the age of 16 will be provided with the “Get ready for the social media age restrictions 8-step action plan for under-16s” sheet. They will work on this at school and, if necessary, take it home to complete. If this sheet is lost, it is available on the eSafety Commissioner website under the “Young people” tab. One of the most important things we can do is reassure our young people that if they are finding this difficult, there are adults they can talk to—including their parents, the pastoral care team at school, and their teachers. Seeking help is the best way to manage these challenges.
If this is difficult, the eSafety Commissioner website suggests a range of counselling and support services. You can also contact your child’s Pastoral Care Team for assistance. If you have any questions or need support, please feel free to reach out to your child’s Pastoral Care Teacher, or Head of House.
