English as an Additional Language

Unit 1

In this unit, students will engage with reading and viewing texts with a focus on personal connections with the story, and work to shape their ideas and knowledge in student-centred texts. Students also will engage with and develop an understanding of effective and cohesive writing. They apply, extend and challenge their understanding and use of imaginative, persuasive and informative text through a growing awareness of situated contexts, stated purposes and audience.

 

On completion of this unit the student should be able to:

  • Make personal connections with, and identify selected vocabulary, text structures, language features and ideas in a text, then produce a personal response to a set text.
  • Use mentor texts to explore a range of effective and cohesive writing styles and genres for selected vocabulary, text structures, language features and conventions used, then craft their own texts designed for a specific purpose, context and audience, and describe decisions made.

Unit 2

n this unit, students will explore the ideas, concerns and tensions and explore the ways in which vocabulary, text structures, language features and conventions of a text work together to create meaning in a set text, or extracts from a set. They will also analyse arguments and the use of persuasive language in texts, and create their own texts intended to position audiences.

 

On completion of this unit the student should be able to:

  • Identify and develop analysis of how the vocabulary, text structures, language features and ideas in a text construct meaning, and produce an analytical response to a set text.
  • Explore and develop analysis of persuasive texts within the context of a contemporary issue, including the ways argument and language can be used to position an audience; and to construct a point of view oral presentation.

Unit 3

In this unit, students read and respond to texts analytically and creatively. They analyse arguments and the use of persuasive language in texts.

 

On completion of this unit the student should be able to:

  • Listen to and discuss ideas, concerns and values presented in a text, informed by selected vocabulary, text structures and language features and how they make meaning, and produce an analytical response to a text.
  • Demonstrate effective writing skills by producing their own texts, designed to respond to a specific context and audience to achieve a stated purpose; and to comment on their decisions made through writing processes.

Unit 4

In this unit, students compare the presentation of ideas, issues and themes in texts. They create an oral presentation intended to position audiences about an issue currently debated in the media.

 

On completion of this unit the student should be able to:

  • Discuss ideas, concerns and values presented in a text, informed by selected vocabulary, text structures and language features and how they make meaning, and produce an analytical response to a set text.
  • Explore and develop analysis of persuasive texts within the context of a contemporary issue, including the ways argument and language can be used to position an audience; and to construct a point of view oral presentation.
