CPS BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM

By Angus Brown

On Monday on the 8th of November, the boys Carnegie basketball team participated in the division tournament against two other schools. Carnegie played extremely well and selflessly the whole day, while also performing great skills and incredible sportsmanship towards teammates, referees, and opposition players. In the first half of the first game, everyone was still getting rid of the cobwebs! But the second half was a different story. Players who didn't play basketball came out of their shell, and the team really felt like a team again! Carnegie won the game. Our next game, and deciding game was next. If we win this, we go to regionals. If we lose, it's over, end of the line. It was a great back and forth matchup between both teams, evenly represented and great sportsmanship both ways. In the first half Carnegie had a slow start, but nonetheless kept within 7 points of Blackrock Primary. In the second half, we began to turn it up! Intensity, teamwork, and winning plays is a great way to describe our end game. We ended up winning by 2, on a beautiful shot by Quinn. Everyone contributed, and shots fell!

A week later, the regional tournament was at hand. This time, four schools competed for the championship title. Carnegie played exceedingly well in all four games, putting effort and positivity into every game. In the first match, we ended up outplaying Dromana, 35-23. A collection of beautiful teamwork and creative passes got us over the line. The next game was our most well fought and hard game of the day; Sacred Heart! After back and forth baskets, Carnegie lost by 3 in a nail biting finish. Not much went to fault in this matchup. Next, we played Rowellyn Park Primary. The team was rewarded with a 40 point victory, and many smiles were shared off the court. And finally, with great shooting, and defensive intensity, we pulled away with a 42 point win. All together, the players all enjoyed the day, and win, lose, or draw It was a great experience!

SOUTHERN REGIONAL BASKETBALL WRAP UP

by Dallas O'Brien

Congratulations to all the boys who represented Carnegie P.S. and the Kingston Division, in the Southern Region Finals last week. It was certainly a great team effort, with every player contributing and giving their utmost in every one of the four games they played.

The first game was against Dromana P.S. who were very lively in opposition. Our boys settled quickly being ably led by the class of Angus B and the smarts of Carlos I. After a tough tussle all game, we were too strong winning 48 – 34 points.

The second game we were hit by a whirlwind, by Sacred Heart P.S., representing the Beachside Division, having a group of small very quick players showing us the way early. Unfortunately we were forced to shoot from long range and our shots weren’t quite dropping through the ring. To the boys credit, we hung in there in the first half but were still 10 points down at the change. It was then our turn to turn up the pressure, with determined efforts by the super skilful Quinn M and bullocking strength of Eamon W, to give us a real chance to take the game. Unfortunately we couldn’t beat the time clock, going down by just 3 points, 42-39.

The third game was against Rowellyn Park, and it was time to show some of our great teamwork. Charlie D continued his superb inside skills, Eric was showing his magic around the key, and Edward C. was being very cool and calm as usual. We skipped out to a very handy early lead. We continued to increase that lead for the remainder of the game, with quite a comfortable win 46-16.

The fourth and final game saw us up against the Dandenong Division. It was time for Josh G. to get on the scoreboard, with a smile to die for, with great encouragement from all his mates. After battling against the big guys tirelessly all day, Patrick was finding his rhythm and really enjoying himself. It was party time for the boys as they put on another classy display, finishing the day off in style with a 41-14 win.

It was a hard 2 hours of high class basketball, and the boys held their heads high, finishing 2nd in the competition. Beaten very narrowly by our one and only defeat by 3 points. However the best part of the day were the smiles on all of the boy’s faces, the enjoyment they got from playing for each other and ultimately the experience and their life-long memories of representing Carnegie P.S. together.

Well Done Angus
