Year 10 Work Experience

Each year, our Year 10 Work Experience Program provides students with the opportunity to step beyond the classroom and gain valuable insight into the world of work. Students spend a week exploring potential career pathways, developing workplace skills and building confidence in new environments. In this edition, we are delighted to share a selection of their experiences, with many more inspiring stories to come in our next Bulletin.

So far my work experience has been really great. For the first two days I did a tour around RMIT, did some user testing on some learning tasks for students and I helped do some 360 photography. On Wednesday and Thursday I helped to set up some computers, I fixed and saved an old android white board and sorted and tested a bunch of Xbox Kinects. I'm hoping tomorrow that I can try out a 360° nova motion simulator but it’s overall been a really great experience.

I really enjoyed stepping into the professional world this week by spending it at Clare Cousins Architects! I loved taking public transport into the city all on my own (without getting lost!). I also enjoyed learning about all the new architecture terms and sketching floor plans for my own imaginary house, but I most loved sitting in meetings to see how architects talk with clients to make real projects come together. Overall, this experience taught me so much, and I can't wait to learn more!

As part of the Year 10 Work Experience Program, I had the opportunity to spend a week at Burwood East Dental Care. It was a great way to experience a real workplace and learn more about the dental profession. The program gave me a better understanding of dentistry and helped build my confidence for the future. 

During the week, I was helping with reception and paperwork, and I also had the chance to observe dental procedures and see what happens behind the scenes in a dental clinic. Every day was a valuable learning experience as I developed skills in organisation and time management. 

This program also gave me insight on what it feels like to work in a professional environment and I'm very grateful for the opportunity. The program gave me a better understanding of dentistry and helped build my confidence for the future.

My work experience at Bates Smart gave me an inspiring insight into the world of architecture and design. Throughout the week, I was tasked with designing a living space for two, which allowed me to apply my creative thinking and see my ideas develop from early sketches into refined, practical concepts. I also witnessed the collaboration, technology, precision, and creativity that drive every project, and gained a clearer understanding of the problem‑solving involved in professional architectural work. 

While seeing the material and textures library and enjoying the generous office perks like morning tea and snacks were the highlights of my week, it was the team’s guidance and willingness to share their expertise that made the experience truly motivating and memorable! This was an incredible experience that I will carry with me as I continue to explore my career path.

Over the past week, I've been fortunate to complete my work experience at Enclave Architects, where I was tasked to design my own house. Throughout the process, from drawing initial sketches to learning how to create digital 3D models, I've gained a much deeper understanding of architecture, and how small decisions about form, layout, materials etc can affect our day to day lives. 

I've learnt that architecture is far more than just design, but communication, collaboration, and balancing creativity with real world constraints. My supervisor has also been incredibly warm and supportive throughout the week, always willing to answer my questions, explain new concepts, and share their experiences. It has been an amazing opportunity, I've learnt so much in just a few days, and gained a real insight into what it's like to work as an architect.

Exploring Faith Through Food and Culture

As part of their Project Based Learning (PBL) curriculum, the Year 8 students have been learning about different religions. On Monday, they embarked on an Interfaith Tour, exploring places of worship across Melbourne learning about the history, beliefs, and traditions of a variety of religions from around the world.

On Wednesday, for each of the religions studied, the students performed the roles of cooks, waiters, hosts or speakers. The cooks had to prepare a variety of foods relevant to their chosen culture in the first two periods of the day. The kitchen was busy and full of nervous energy as everyone came together to have their tasty dishes delivered on time.

Other students had to meet and host Year 12 students and religious representatives from the community whilst others served the guests various drinks and food items. Student speakers then presented a talk about their religion, including the significance of the table decorations and the cultural dishes. They also gave out a gift bag to each guest with items based on their selected religion. 

Overall, the event exposed the students to the many religions around the world and taught them just a little bit about what it was like to plan, cook and host a formal meal.

Year 12 Media Screening 2026

Congratulations to our Year 12 Media students, who completed and screened their VCE productions last week. The evening showcased an impressive collection of animations, music videos, documentaries, experimentals and narrative short films.

It was wonderful to see so much support from their friends, families and teachers who came to celebrate the culmination of the students' hard work. To top off the evening, they were presented with Oscars in recognition of their outstanding technical and creative achievements.

Taking A Moment For Our Year 12s

This week the Year 12s were delighted with laughter and treats as a well earnt reward for their hard work. On Tuesday, Ms Lopez and Ms Mackie and the Heads of House hosted a surprise 100 days of Year 12 celebration. It was a complete surprise to the Year 12s as their fear of being told off soon became excitement as they reflected on their 100th day of being a Year 12 and realised just how far they’d come. They were embraced with chocolate snowballs, balloons and laughter to go around that filled the space.

On Thursday the students ran a morning breakfast joined by parents and family to honour their accomplishments and to convey to their parents their gratitude for the ongoing support they receive as they face this momentous year. The students ran a coffee cart and a buffet of scrolls, pastries, and yogurt as sweet treats to start the day. They also had many balloons, and signs to take photos with as they start their journey into their last semester at Huntingtower.
