Taking, Blessing, Breaking, Giving

A Eucharistic Reflection on Matthew 14:13–21

In the Gospel of Matthew, we hear the wonderful story of Jesus feeding more than five thousand people on a grassy hillside. When the disciples looked at the massive crowd, all they could see was scarcity, just five loaves of bread and two small fish. However, when those humble gifts were placed into the hands of Jesus, something extraordinary happened:

“Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.” — Matthew 14:19

These four actions: taking, blessing, breaking, and giving are the very heart of the Eucharist. They are the exact actions Jesus performed at the Last Supper, and they are what we witness at every Mass.

Welcoming our Year 4 Children to the Table

Last Saturday was a joyous milestone for our community as our Year 4 children received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion for the very first time.

Just like the little boy who offered his modest lunch to Jesus, our children came to the altar bringing their open hearts, their innocence, and their simple faith. In Holy Communion, Jesus takes what seems simple, a small piece of bread, and fills it with His real presence, love, and grace. He reminds us that no matter how small we might feel, when we place our lives in His hands, He nourishes us deeply and gives us everything we need.

Leftover Baskets: A Faith to Share

The Gospel ends with a remarkable detail: after everyone ate and was satisfied, the disciples collected twelve baskets of leftovers. God’s love in the Eucharist is never "just enough", it is overflowing!

When our Year 4 students received Jesus last Saturday, they weren't just receiving a gift for themselves; they were being invited to share that overflowing love with the world. Every time we receive Holy Communion, Jesus sends us out into our playground, our homes, and our classrooms to be His hands and feet, sharing kindness, forgiveness, and peace.

Let us Pray,

Loving God,

Thank You for feeding us with Your grace and filling our hearts with Your love.

Open our eyes to see the needs of those around us, 

just as You saw the hungry crowd on the hillside. 

Teach us to offer what little we have

our small acts of love, our daily efforts, and our gentle spirit

knowing that in Your hands, even the smallest gift becomes a miracle.

Help us to leave Your table ready to serve. 

Make us Your hands to reach out in kindness to those who are lonely or hurting. 

Make us Your feet to walk alongside those who need a friend.

Give us the courage to offer forgiveness when it is hard, 

to share kindness when it is unexpected, 

and to bring peace into our classrooms, our playgrounds, and our homes.

May the joy of the Eucharist transform our lives so that others may see 

Your light in everything we do.
