First Nations Engagement Day

Our First Nations students from Years 1 to 6 recently attended a First Nations Engagement Day at the museum, enjoying a rich and engaging cultural experience.

The day began with an Acknowledgement of Country delivered in Wiradjuri language by Brian Ah-See, setting a meaningful tone for the day ahead.

Students then participated in an art workshop with local artist Sandon Gibbs O’Neill, who shared the importance of storytelling through art and its connection to culture. Students had the opportunity to create their own mini artworks to take home.

This was followed by an interactive cultural dance session with Jo Anne Wright from Dyiramadilinya Cultural Dance. Students learnt Wiradjuri language through movement and numbers, joined in a welcome dance, and participated in fun, inclusive games.

At lunchtime, students enjoyed connecting with peers from other schools, strengthening a sense of community and shared experience.

In the afternoon, students explored the Transformations: Art of the Scott Sisters exhibition at Orange Regional Museum, guided by museum educator Sally MacLennan. They learnt about native moths and butterflies, and explored Dreaming stories and the cultural significance of these species in Aboriginal culture.

The day concluded with a bush tucker workshop led by Gerald Power, where students learnt about native foods and enjoyed a tasting experience.

It was a fantastic day of learning, connection, and cultural pride, with students fully engaged and representing our school with respect and enthusiasm.
