Student Leadership Roles

As part of the Grade 5 and 6 students' current knowledge rich curriculum unit titled: Civics and Citizenship - Our Government, Laws and Democracy, our senior students have been deeply immersed in learning about Democracy, Parliament and the Australian Voting System. To bring this learning to life, we are thrilled to announce a complete overhaul of our Student Leadership roles at Mother Teresa!
Student-Led Change
This process began with the students themselves. Our Grade 5 and 6 students wrote to me outlining the specific leadership roles they felt our school truly needs. After reviewing their letters, I am proud to announce we now have the following student leadership positions at Mother Teresa:
School Captains - x4 Grade 6 students
Faith Leaders -x4 Grade 5/6 students
Sustainability Leaders - x4 Grade 5/6 students
PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) Leaders- x4 Grade 5/6 students
Sports Leaders - x4 Grade 5/6 students
Technology Leaders - x4 Grade 5/6 students
Wellbeing Leaders - x4 Grade 5/6 students
The Application Process
The process our students have gone through is as follows:
Written Application: Students needed to write a brief statement outlining why they would like to apply for their chosen role.
Endorsements: To foster a sense of community and accountability, students needed an endorsement from their parent/carer and one staff member from the school who is not currently a Year 5 or 6 teacher.
Speeches: Student candidates presented a speech to their peers.
Preferential Voting: In a direct link to classroom learning, the teachers held an election using the preferential voting system - the only thing missing was the sausage sizzle!
Staff Vote: Our staff also had the opportunity to vote.
This process has been rolled out in two parts with School Captains and Faith Leaders nominations, speeches and votes held yesterday. Unfortunately we didn't have enough nominations for Sustainability Leader elections to go ahead so we will open this role back up along with the other roles (PBL Leaders, Sports Leaders, Technology Leaders and Wellbeing Leaders) next term.
Newly elected Student Leaders
We are pleased to share that the following students have been elected into these roles
School Captains = Ariana, Benjamin, Anika and Ally
Faith Leaders = Lourd, Jacob, Chelsey and Anderih
These leaders were anounced this afternoon at our Easter Raffle draw. Congratulations to these students, we know they will do a wonderful job leading our school this year.
