This term, Health classes have a wonderful new home: a dedicated classroom that students have enjoyed coming to, and one that is steadily taking shape as a real hub for learning about all things Health.
Across all year levels, students have had a strong focus on learning about themselves — their behaviour, emotions and feelings — and understanding how they interact with and belong in the world around them.
Our junior classes have focused on friendships, family and relationships. They've explored what makes up a family and why connection matters. This term, students are also identifying, discovering and labelling their physical bodies and the important jobs each part does, as well as learning about safe and unsafe feelings, and building strategies for dealing with unsafe situations. They'll also be learning about safety in their everyday environments — at home, at school and in the community.
Our senior classes have been exploring why we react the way we do to different situations, including the chemical responses and signals behind our emotions. They've been building skills to manage feelings, and practising kindness, compassion and empathy — all with the aim of understanding and controlling emotions a little better. Last term, students spent time learning about nutrition, including protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, fats and oils, the food groups, balanced diets, and the role food plays in a healthy lifestyle.
This term, students are diving into the body's systems. So far they've learnt all about the skeletal system — ask them to name a few bones! This week, they've started exploring the muscular system: the different types of muscles, how they work, and what they do for our bodies.
