What's Been Happening in Year 3

Year 3 Community Engagement Night

In June, the Year 3 students and their families enjoyed a wonderful Community Engagement Night focused on building fluency in mathematics through fun and engaging maths games. Families explored a range of hands-on activities that strengthened students’ confidence, accuracy and understanding in maths.

Throughout the evening, students practised skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, problem-solving and number recall alongside their parents and carers. It was fantastic to see students confidently teaching their families the strategies they use in the classroom.

Fluency in mathematics is an important part of learning, helping students develop strong number knowledge and confidence when solving more complex problems. The games and activities showed how maths can be both enjoyable and meaningful.

Families were also provided with fluency games to take home so students could continue practising beyond the classroom. The night was a fantastic success and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate learning together as a community.

What's Been Happening in Year 6

Zoo Excursion with Prep Buddies

As we arrived to the zoo, we slowly walked through the gate and saw all the fascinating enclosures around us. The first enclosure we visited was the wild sea exhibit. At the front of the exhibit, there was a large tank that looked like a pool that had fiddlersrays, port jackson sharks, along with a lobster that was hard to find and a few other interesting species of fish. As we walked through the exhibit, it was really dark with a huge fish tank with a seal and penguins inside. We were all really excited to be seeing these kinds of animals. It also had a lot of fish tanks housing many species including sea horses and small cat fish. We then entered an education room where the public is not allowed. We got to learn about biotic and abiotic which is living and non-living things. We had an activity to do which was us dressing up as animals that would need to change their features to adapt to different environments. It was fun learning about different animals and how they live. Overall, we had an amazing experience.

As a group, we got to explore the Gorilla Rainforest and the Growing Wild trail. In the gorilla rainforest, there were lots of gorillas that were climbing trees and were staring at us. One of the Gorillas was very close to falling off the net which was funny. We also got to see tree-top apes and monkeys that had different obstacles to mimic their naturual habitats, including nets, trees and ladders. On the Growing Wild trail, we entered an area that was full of different obstacles where the meerkats were able to roam freely. Although we were not able to interact with them, it was fun to be able to see them wandering around. It was a fun experience that we got to have with our prep buddies.

One of the animals we got to see on our zoo adventure were giraffes and baby giraffes. We got to see the baby giraffes eating grass off the food cage and our class was filled with amazement. It was really exciting to see the giraffes because it was one of our favourite animals we wanted to see at the zoo. It was also interesting to see how tall they were in real life. Just before we were about to leave, we were able to stop by the frog and reptiles enclosure. We got to see frogs that could camouflage, and colourful snakes that could also camouflage in their habitat which made it hard for us to spot them. Everybody was trying to find each reptile in their enclosure. After seeing the frogs and snakes, we moved on to see the crocodiles, a small komodo dragon, turtles, kameleons and lizards. Overall, the day turned out to be really fun and exciting, especially going on our first excursion with our prep buddies. It was also really interesting to learn new facts about all kinds of animals.

As we entered the forest of wonder, we were filled with joy as a big tiger came up to the window. It was big and scary but it was interesting to see a tiger in real life. As we continued, we entered the butterfly house where there were many butterflies in a range of different colours and sizes. Some people were lucky enough for a butterfly to land on them. The butterfly house was warm inside so it would feel like their natural habitat. Lastly, we got to see an orangutan and a siamang. They were climbing around in their enclosure and we were surprised. Overall, that trail was one of our favourites. It was an amazing experience and we would like to see it again.
