Respecting Every Member of Our School Community

Dear Parents and Carers,

At St Mary MacKillop College, we are deeply committed to nurturing a community where every person feels seen, valued, and respected. Our shared mission is not only to educate young people academically, but to form them as compassionate, respectful individuals who understand the dignity of all.

In recent weeks, we have been reinforcing with students the importance of showing respect to all members of our school community, not only their teachers, but also our Learning Support Officers (LSOs), administration staff, maintenance team, and grounds staff. These individuals play a vital role in the daily life of our College. They support learning, ensure our environment is safe and welcoming, and contribute significantly to the wellbeing of every student.

Respect is one of the core values we seek to live out at SMMC. It is demonstrated in the way we speak to one another, the tone we use, the gratitude we show, and the recognition that every role in our community matters. As a Catholic school inspired by the life and teachings of Saint Mary MacKillop, we are reminded to “never see a need without doing something about it.” This includes the need for kindness, courtesy, and appreciation in our everyday interactions.

We are asking for your support in continuing this important conversation at home. A simple discussion with your child about how they speak to and treat all staff members can make a meaningful difference. Encouraging them to use polite language, acknowledge others with a greeting, and express thanks helps build a culture where everyone feels respected and valued.

Together, as partners in your child’s education, we can continue to foster a strong sense of community where dignity, kindness, and mutual respect are at the heart of all we do.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our College and its values.
