Year 4 Parliament Incursion

Recently, our Year Four students were excited to participate in their first interactive webinar. The students explored the difference between laws and rules and how parliament is the place where rules and laws for Australia are made. They learned about why we have laws and how they help protect people and keep communities fair and safe.

Danny - Respect

We learnt about rules and laws and what the consequences are if they are broken. We also talked about how serious some consequences can be. Parliament makes the rules and laws for Australia.

Tommy - Curious

Rules are something that anybody can make, but you can't expect everyone to follow them. If I was playing a game I could make rules, but not everyone would have to follow them. With laws, there are legal punishments and sometimes you can go to prison if you break a law.

Chantelle - Inspire

I learnt rules have small consequences and laws have bigger consequences if you break them. Everybody can make up rules, but only the government can make laws. We discovered the green carpet represents the Australian bush and the pink one represents the dried flowers from gum leaves. A law starts as a bill and is made in the green area (house of Representatives) and then it goes to the pink room (Senate). Then to the girl (Governor General) who represents King Charles.

Bailey - Optimism

I discovered that there are two rooms in Parliament House. One is red and one is green and they make laws there. There is a speaker and she has a bigger voice than the Prime Minister because she helps make the laws. There are lots of different jobs in Parliament and everyone has different roles. People can also go and watch in the House of Representatives.
