The Power of Reading         

The staff undergo continuous professional development to stay aware of what the latest research is in the educational space. For this week's professional learning we watched a webinar based on Reading. Some more information to add to the last newsletter include : 

How do skilled readers comprehend? 

Skilled readers use :

• Word Reading
• Vocabulary Knowledge
• Academic and cultural background knowledge
• Knowledge of syntax
• Text structure understanding
• Comprehension strategies
• Reading with a purpose/goal

• Reading motivation and engagement

   

Defining Reading Comprehension

Successful comprehension occurs when the reader has good word reading skills, robust vocabulary knowledge, an understanding of the grammatical rules  that govern their language, and the integrative and inference-making skills that enable them to derive a mental model  of what the read. Oakhill, et al (2023), p. 285
