Science Report

Our Prep students have been busy learning about the five senses, so far we have explored sight and hearing. Students enjoyed making their own binoculars and telescopes to investigate how we use our eyes, and this week they are creating “chicken cluckers” to experiment with sound and how we use our ears.

Year 1 students are taking part in Nature Play lessons. This means all lessons take place outside in our natural environment. The last couple of weeks we have been investigating patterns in nature; have a look at our creations in the pictures below.

Year 2 students have been exploring FORCES! We have taken part in some tug of war to understand push and pull and made some helicopter blades of different sizes to learn about gravity, air resistance, pull and drag. This week students are designing and building land yachts, testing different sail designs to see which one performs best in a race.

Year 3 and 4 students have enjoyed being outside and making most of the weather to explore our local wetlands. We started off with a short walk around to highlight some of the local plants and animals. We are now practising botanical drawing to record features of some of the more common plant species. Later on we’ll look at what's in the water and end the term observing and investigating local birds found in and around the school.

This term students in Year 5 and 6 are investigating light and energy. This will be a very hands-on term as students experiment with mirrors and prisms to explore the concepts of reflection, refraction, colour and sight. They’ll even find out the answer to the age old question of why the sky is blue.
