Toileting Accidents

A Change of Clothes in Your Child’s Bag

Starting school is exciting, but sometimes small accidents can happen as children get used to new routines. To help your child feel comfortable all day, we ask that every Foundation child keeps spare underwear in their school bag each day.

Please include:

  • Underwear
  • Socks or stockings (depending on what your child usually wears)

All items should be placed together in a clearly labelled Ziploc bag inside your child’s school bag.

Sometimes children are busy playing or get to the bathroom a little later than planned. If this happens, they will change into their clean clothes in a private space. A trusted adult will be nearby to offer verbal support and encouragement if they need help.

At St Thomas, our Child Safe policy means that school staff cannot undress children or assist with changing underwear. If your child cannot manage on their own and needs help because they are wet, dirty, or uncomfortable, we will contact a parent or emergency contact to come to school and help. You’ll be given a private area to assist your child.

We always ensure that children are treated with care and respect, and that no child feels embarrassed. These things are completely normal as children learn to manage their needs and grow in independence.

Teachers remind children often to go to the bathroom — before and after playtimes and during learning time — until they are confident asking on their own. Some children also learn to use the Auslan sign for “Please may I go to the toilet.”

Having a change of underwear ready gives children confidence and helps them feel safe, comfortable, and cared for throughout the school day.
