Mathematics

Our Year 3 mathematicians focused on developing their understanding of time. Students practised reading and representing time on both analogue and digital clocks, making connections between the position of clock hands and digital displays. 

Throughout the week, students learned to:

• Tell the time to the nearest 5-minute interval on analogue and digital clocks. 
• Read and interpret time to the nearest minute. 
• Use their knowledge of time to calculate elapsed time. 
• Apply time-telling skills to solve real-world word problems. l, interval, hour, minute, and elapsed time, and used hands-on clock activities to strengthen their understanding. 

Try This at Home

Encourage your child to:

• Read the time on analogue clocks around the house.
• Estimate and measure how long everyday activities take.
• Work out start and finish times for events using elapsed time.
• Practise using phrases such as quarter past, half past, and quarter to.

Inquiry

This week in Inquiry, our students have been learning about different cultural celebrations and traditions from around the world. As part of our unit"Where We Are in Place and Time", students are developing an understanding of how celebrations help people express their culture, beliefs and history. 

Holi: The Festival of Colours

Students learned about Holi, a Hindu celebration that marks the arrival of spring and symbolises joy, renewal and the triumph of good over evil. We explored how Holi is celebrated with vibrant colours, music and community gatherings. To consolidate their learning, students created their own colourful Holi Spring Trees, inspired by the bright colours associated with the festival. 

Chinese New Year

Students also investigated Chinese New Year, one of the most significant celebrations in many Asian cultures. They learned about the Chinese zodiac, traditional customs, family celebrations and the symbolism behind decorations such as red lanterns. Students then designed and created their own Chinese lanterns, which will be proudly displayed in our classroom.

Literacy

This week in English, students have been developing their reading comprehension, writing, and word study skills. Our literacy learning focused on understanding how words are built, strengthening reading comprehension strategies, and creating engaging narratives. 

Reading

Students explored the text"Which Jack?" from Wongutha Tales, learning to identify and answer who, what and where questions before, during and after reading. They practised finding evidence in the text to support their answers and worked towards using full sentences when responding to comprehension questions. 

Writing

Students continued developing their Dreaming-inspired narratives. They focused on creating clear beginnings, middles and endings, adding descriptive language, editing their work, and preparing final published pieces. Throughout the writing process, students learned the importance of planning, revising and presenting their work to an audience. 

Our spelling program explored Latin base words such as form and struct, helping students understand how prefixes, suffixes and morphemes contribute to word meaning. Students investigated words including construct, structure, instruct, obstruct and formation, while also practising decoding, spelling and vocabulary development.
