Unpacking the Value of Excellence

When we hear the word excellence, it can be easy to picture high test scores or sporting trophies. But at St John Vianney's, excellence is grounded in something far deeper. Rooted in our faith, excellence is about honoring the unique, God-given gifts within every child and encouraging them to grow into the fullest version of who they were created to be.

Excellence is not about perfection—it is about effort, attitude, and continuous growth.

What Excellence Looks Like Across the School Day

Throughout the day, our students demonstrate excellence in ways big and small:

In the Classroom: Choosing to persist with a challenging math problem, listening respectfully when a peer speaks, and taking pride in the presentation of their work.

On the Playground: Including someone who is playing alone, accepting a referee’s call with grace, and showing fair play.

During Prayer & Assembly: Showing reverent focus during morning prayer and taking time to quietly reflect on how they can be a light to others.

Partnering at Home: Supporting Excellence in Everyday Moments

Here are a few ways to nurture a spirit of excellence in your home environment:

Praise Effort Over Outcome: Frame success around hard work rather than innate talent. Try saying, "I love how much focus you put into that reading" instead of "You're so smart."

Normalise Mistakes as Growth: We view mistakes as crucial steps in learning. When something goes wrong, ask: "What did this teach us for next time?"

Encourage Small Daily Responsibilities: Excellence is a habit built through everyday routines—packing their school bag, taking care of personal belongings, or helping set the dinner table.

Model Gratitude & Kindness: Remind children that being their best self includes how they treat others. Taking time for a family evening prayer or sharing "one good thing from today" fosters a heart of appreciation.

When home and school work together, we help our children discover that doing their best is one of the most powerful ways to share their gifts with the world. Thank you!
