Guten Tag! (Good day!) Please find below an overview of the topics that we are learning about this term, by year level.

Foundation students are learning to name some of the people and objects in their classroom environment. They will practice answering the question ‘was ist das?’ (what is that?) using simple structures as they identify and describe objects using the new vocabulary as well as previously learned colours and numbers. We will also be marking ‘100 Tagen in der Schule’ in our German classes this term - herzlichen Glückwunsch an unseren Studienanfänger (congratulations to all our Foundation students)!

Year 1 and 2 students are learning vocabulary and simple phrases related to our classroom and learning activities to increase the use of German for basic classroom requests. We will be exploring and practicing these both verbally and in written form through simplified role-plays, games and activities. We are also building our number knowledge and fluency using a range of songs, videos and games.

In Year 3 and 4, we are focusing on ‘Essen & Trinken’ (Food & Drink). Students will learn about traditional German meals and food items. They will be introduced to the names for some common food and drinks as well as simple structures to express their likes and dislikes, and how to request items in a restaurant. Students will be practising their developing language skills through a range of role-play and verbal and written activities.

Senior school students are exploring German culture through a research project focused on inspiring Germans/Swiss/Austrians. They will research then share information about someone of German origin, or with a strong connection with German culture, that they find inspirational and why. The project provides students the opportunity to reflect on positive role models and what makes somebody inspirational, as well as the influence of German culture on our contemporary world.
