Principal's Report

It has been a wonderful start to the term, with everyone settling in well. New students to CGPS, especially our prep students, have adapted to the rhythm and routines of school - despite being a little more tired.

In my newsletter piece for today, I will be sharing some details of some important routines and processes that are in place to ensure the right staff expert is on the right task and also flagging a couple of special days in May that are worth noting - as always I encourage every family to share days that are important to them so we can recognise through our comms channels.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

Since the beginning of 2024, Carlton Gardens has been working to establish our SWPBS system. We have shared a couple of important elements of this work with families in the past, such as our Matrix (seen below). This work is being lead by Alex and Leah, who are supporting our students and staff to implement a range of key evidence based initiatives with fidelity. What this means is that we are continuing to refine and embed clear processes for promoting expected behaviours and discouraging undesirable behaviour errors. Unfortunately, behaviour errors occur at CGPS and we need to take action to prioritise reflection, learning, reconnection to our school values and then administration of logical consequences.

We want to address all issues that occur in a timely manner and especially before they become significant issues.

Leah, who is our Wellbeing and Engagement Leader, works very closely with our students, teachers and families work through wellbeing and behavioural issues. Her expertise in this space ensures that everyone is set up and supported to achieve the most positive outcome for all. Below is our SWPBS flow chart that helps guide our responses to issues of behaviour raised or observed at school. We hope that this provides some clarity to the processes involved and we will look to share more information as the year progresses.

Children's Day - Japan

In Japan, Kodomo no hi, or "Children's Day," is celebrated every year on May 5. On this national holiday, children are respected and honoured for their individual strengths and happiness is wished upon them. It became a national holiday in 1948, but it has been a day of celebration in Japan since ancient times. We hope that all of our families from Japan had the opportunity to recognise this special day, also a great opportunity for all families to celebrate the healthy growth and happiness of all children.

Recognising and celebrating IDAHOBIT

The Department of Education is committed to ensuring all Victorian government schools are respectful, safe and inclusive places of learning and work for all students, staff and members of our school communities.

As part of this commitment, the department supports schools to join the many other schools and workplaces across the country to recognise International Day Against LGBTIQA+ Discrimination (IDAHOBIT) which falls on 17 May annually.

This is to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex, queer, questioning and asexual (LGBTIQA+) people in our schools and the community, in accordance with obligations in the Child Safe Standards to uphold diversity and equity for everyone regardless of their background, characteristics or beliefs.
