Year 7 Visual Arts Gallery Visit

Year 7 Visual Arts students visited the Art Gallery of New South Wales on Monday 10 August for a dynamic introduction to engaging with artworks in a gallery setting. Students were divided into six groups, with the first three groups completing an introductory workshop led by gallery guides. These sessions took students to a selection of artworks where they participated in guided questioning and discussion and practical tasks, allowing them to experience artworks up close and observe details such as brushwork, texture and material qualities that cannot be fully appreciated on a screen or PowerPoint.

The remaining groups completed a series of activities in a structured workbook. These included an 'Elements of Art' scavenger hunt, drawing tasks inspired by Billy Bain’s exhibition, and a contemplative discussion around portraiture exploring how portraits can communicate storytelling, commemorate individuals, or present a likeness.

This excursion offered many students their first experience inside a major art gallery, helping them build confidence in looking, thinking and talking about artworks in meaningful ways. The groups swapped over after lunch.
