What's Been Happening in Year 5

In Science, Year 5 students have been exploring the states of matter, including solids, liquids and gases. They have learned to define each state, identify their observable properties, classify different materials and explain how particles are arranged and move in solids, liquids and gases. Students have also investigated how adding or removing heat can cause matter to change state through processes such as melting, freezing, evaporation and condensation, and considered how this knowledge is used in everyday life, scientific investigations and cultural practices. 

To extend this learning, students participated in the Year 5 Supercharged Incursion, a highly engaging 60-minute interactive workshop. Through exciting demonstrations and hands-on activities, students classified different types of matter, observed changes between states through heating and cooling, investigated how gases can be created through an exploding bag experiment and viewed a combustion demonstration. They were also introduced to plasma as the fourth state of matter and enjoyed a range of memorable dry ice activities, including Boo Bubbles, Crystal Ball and Dry Ice Bubble Foam.
