SPOTLIGHT
Year 4
Year 4 has been absolute organised chaos lately, but we’re loving every second of it! In Mathematics we learnt about 3D objects and now we are learning how fractions work, mostly to ensure we get the biggest slice of cake or pizza when sharing with our siblings. We have been fortunate enough to have Emma Higgins teach us some basketball skills, we are dribbling like pros, and shooting hoops like superstars, the energy has been sky-high. To top it off, we have been drawing the "strange creatures they caught on the way to school," it has been a lot of fun watching the creative juices flowing and the monsters come alive.
Year 5
Year 5 has hit the ground running this term, bringing energy, creativity, and critical thinking to all areas of learning!
Creative Arts: Drama & Fractured Fairy Tales
Drama has been an absolute blast as Year 5 explores how to use facial expressions, gestures, and eye contact to portray a character. This unit has unlocked the students' creative expression and they have delighted us with unexpected and imaginative character impersonations during their improvisations and scripted performances. We can't wait to see the students perform in their own fractured fairy tale script.
Book Fair with Year 1
Our Year 5 buddies showed wonderful empathy and responsibility during their recent buddy session with Year 1. Together, they explored the Book Fair to help their younger buddies browse and choose special books. Back in the Year 5 learning space, the pairs settled in together to read classic fairy tales.
Science & Technology: Science Week Space Challenge National Science Week was held last week and it was driven by the concept Seeds of Science: Nurturing knowledge for all. Year 5 students stepped into the shoes of aerospace engineers with their fast paced STEM design challenge; Design and build a functional landing system to protect a fragile Mars Rover during a 1-metre drop test. Teams had five minutes to plan and build using a few everyday materials. The creativity and rapid problem-solving on display were truly out of this world, with teams successfully landing their devices under immense time pressure!
It has been a wonderful start to the term, and we can’t wait to see what Year 5 achieves next.
CHESS at St Nicholas School
Last week the students hosted the team from St Xavier's School, Gunnedah.
We played 2 rounds which were hotly contested. Gunnedah eventually emerged as the victors.
We have enjoyed the experience and look forward to the St Nicholas School chess competition in Term 4.
BRAIN OLYMPIA
On Tuesday, St Nicholas had two teams compete in the Tamworth Cluster of Brain Olympia. The Teams consisted of Year 4, 5 and 6 Students.
The event took place a St Edwards and consisted of seven schools competing.
Students put their thinking, creativity and confidence to the test across General Knowledge Trivia, Public Speaking, Maths Problem Solving and Drama.
The top three schools, along with the winning small school, will progress to the Week 9 finals, where they'll take on the winning schools from the Inverell and Walgett clusters.
Congratulations to St Nicholas Team 1 for coming fourth and St Nicholas Team 2 which came second!! - which means they are through to the finals! Well Done!!
