Dear Parents and carers, 

At St Nicholas Primary School, we believe that every child’s educational journey is a shared path. When you choose to enrol your child in our school community, you enter into a Positive Partnership Commitment—a collaborative promise to work hand-in-hand with our staff to maximise learning, wellbeing, and faith development outcomes for your child.

A successful learning pathway is not built in isolation; it is fostered when a strong family-school partnership is established and maintained. Research and experience show that a healthy family-school connection acts as a powerful, protective, and enabling factor for student growth in learning and wellbeing. 

The Power of Adult Modelling

One of the most impactful ways we can support our students is through the examples we set as adults. Children are highly perceptive, and they look to us as the adults in their lives to understand how to navigate the world.

When parents and school staff operate with mutual support, respect, and calm, especially in potentially stressful or challenging situations, we provide our children with an important model of behaviour. Adults working together not only promotes physical and emotional safety, but it also dramatically increases the chances of successful learning outcomes for our students.

Conversely, when students witness alignment, respect, and positive reinforcement between their parents and their teachers, they feel more secure and connected to their school. 

Supporting the school in front of your children reinforces the value of education and signals to them that their school is a safe, respected, and trusted place.

What does Active Partnership look like? 

We understand that there will be situations that challenge us both as parents and as a school. When these moments arise, we welcome open, constructive discussion about these situations and want to work collaboratively toward what is best for our students. While a positive partnership does not mean we will always agree on every detail, it defines how we work through these challenges — with mutual respect, constructive dialogue, and a shared focus on student wellbeing and safety. 

Here is how we need to put this partnership into daily practice. 

1. Be a Positive Influence: Display a willingness to partner positively with school staff. We always want to work towards what is best for our students. 
2. Model Courtesy and Respect: Ensure that courtesy and respect form the basis of all communications and interactions with all school staff, other students, and families.
3. Engage in Open Communication: Foster regular conversations at home with your child about their learning, wellbeing, safety, and connection to school. This positions your family to easily initiate constructive contact with us when a concern arises.

4. Follow Established Processes: The Frameworks and practices at St Nicholas are intentionally designed to keep students safe, valued, and supported, ensuring that each student’s dignity is at the center of decisions we make. If you do not understand how a policy is being applied, we ask that you seek assistance from us. If you have concerns, please contact us so we can continue to work together.
