Mathematics: Exploring Shapes
In Mathematics, our Year 2 students have been busy exploring the fascinating world of 2D and 3D shapes and their features. They have been learning to recognise, compare and classify different shapes by looking closely at their properties, including the number of sides, faces, edges and vertices. Students have also explored whether surfaces are curved or straight and used mathematical language to describe what they notice.
Students have developed their mathematical vocabulary by using words such as opposite, parallel, curved and straight to describe and compare shapes. They have also investigated how different shapes can be used to create objects and structures, considering why certain shapes suit different purposes.
Our students have enjoyed hands-on activities where they have built, sorted and compared a variety of objects and structures. They have explored how changing a structure's shape or design can affect its strength and stability, and discussed why certain designs suit particular uses.
Through these practical learning experiences, students have been encouraged to look closely at the features of shapes, explain their thinking and make connections between mathematics and the objects and structures they see in the world around them.
It has been wonderful to see our students developing their mathematical vocabulary, confidence and ability to explain their reasoning as they investigate shapes, space and the ways we use them in everyday life!

Visit from Pam and Moby (Guide Dogs Australia)
The Understanding Others Action Team (Claire) and Culture Club Action Team (Melody) were excited to welcome Pam and Moby from Guide Dogs Australia for an inspiring visit. Pam shared how Guide Dogs Australia supports people who are blind or have low vision to live independently and confidently. Students also learned about the different ways guide dogs and assistance dogs can support people in their everyday lives, including mobility assistance, therapy and emotional support, and support for people with autism and other disabilities.
Pam shared her personal journey with vision impairment, explaining that she began losing her sight in her 40s due to a genetic condition and now has very limited vision. Moby is her fourth Guide Dog, supporting her to navigate the world with greater independence. Students also learned about controlled disobedience, where Guide Dogs can choose not to follow a command if doing so would put their handler in danger.
Pam’s visit from Guide Dogs Australia was an inspiring experience for our students. She shared how Guide Dogs supports people who are blind or have low vision through Guide Dogs, Braille, walking canes and other assistive technologies that promote independence. Students were amazed to learn that it can cost around $60,000 to raise and train one Guide Dog. Pam’s powerful message, “Just because I can’t see, doesn’t mean I can’t do,” encouraged students to recognise that challenges do not have to limit what we can achieve.

Support Our Quantity in a Jar Fundraiser
Our Social Justice Action Team is asking our school community to support our Quantity in a Jar Fundraiser, raising much-needed funds for St John Bosco School in Vailoa Palauli, Savai‘i, Samoa. The Salesian Sisters opened the school at the beginning of this year and are working hard to provide education and opportunities for the local children. Every contribution, big or small, will help support the school and its students. We encourage our families to get behind this wonderful cause and help us make a difference!

JUNIOR ULTIMATE FRISBEE CLINICS
Juniors had a great time in their Ultimate Frisbee Clinic on Monday.
Juniors will have their last Ultimate Frisbee Clinic on Monday. Please ensure students are wearing their sports uniform and have their water bottle. Reminders will also be placed in Afternoon Reminders.

SENIOR EXTRA CURRICULAR EVENTS
LIFESAVING VICTORIA – GR 5/6 RESUSCITATE A MATE
Today our Grade 5/6 students were introduced to emergency response management (DRSABCD). They learnt the steps to follow in an emergency situation and the skills to potentially save a life. This program was delivered by Jayden a trained Lifeguard.

TERM 4 SWIMMING
Thank you to all the parents that have offered to assist in the Junior Changerooms. All parents that have offered to assist will need to attend a briefing session which I will run during Parent/Teacher Interviews on Thursday 17th September.
I will run a session at 4.30pm and one at 7.00pm in the Meeting Room. If you are not able to make either of these briefings I will be in the Community Room during the evening from 3.30pm assisting with the book fair. Please come and see me. I will also be at school on Friday 18th September. You can come and see me in the office area.
A reminder to parents that swimming begins the first week back in Term 4. Students will need to wear their bathers under their uniform and bring a bag with their towel, undergarments and thongs. Students will put their thongs on before leaving for swimming to make changing easier. They will then put their shoes back on once they return to school.
Swimming timetables have been uploaded onto the nForma permission form as an attachment. Please print it off and ensure you have it available at home.

Please ensure your child is prepared for their swimming lesson so our office staff do not need to use their valuable time ringing parents and asking them to bring swimming gear.
Parents please note you are welcome to attend Casey Race to view your child’s lesson but photographs and videos are not allowed and only parents who have attended the briefing session are able to assist in the junior change rooms.
A reminder to parents that swimming is an important part of the PE curriculum and all students are expected to attend. It’s imperative that students know how to keep themselves safe around water. If there is a medical reason your child cannot attend a session, they will then remain at school in another Learning Space.
