The Preps have been doing some cumulative reviews this week, with a focus on writing dictated sentences and picture sequence writing. They have been reviewing sounds and last week were introduced to the digraphs 'wh' and 'th.' Grade Prep children have been learning more about vowels and that every word has a vowel or vowel sound in it. In Prep, children regularly read words to improve their fluency. Grade Prep listened to an information text about "Objects" and then went on an "Objects Hunt" to locate items that were rough, smooth, bendy or rigid. Finally, Grade Prep children have been listening to and discussing the storybook, "There's a Bear on my Chair," by Ross Collins.
Gr 1
Grade Ones have been learning to spell words using the /oy/ and /oi/ spelling patterns and have continued learning about adverbs with the suffix –ly. Some of their new tricky words are only, great and their. In writing, Grade One's focus has been on writing the conclusion and the consequence of a story. As usual, there has been a lot of segmenting and blending of sounds, lots of word reading and writing. Grade Ones are about to begin learning about contractions and how an apostrophe is used to take the place of one or more letters when two words come together to make a new word eg. Would not – wouldn't. Grade Ones have been listening to the story, "Migaloo - the White Whale" and have answered lots of questions about the text. In writing, the Grade Ones have been combining sentences and expanding sentences by asking 'When?' 'Where?' and 'How?'
Gr 2
Some Grade Twos have completed a cumulative review and have revised some of their sounds such as /j/ (-ge and –dge) and the doubling rule. They will also revise the bossy 'e' rule that applies when adding a vowel suffix. Other Grade Twos are revising contractions and the use of the apostrophe in contracted words. In reading, children have been reading texts and Finding the Main Idea. They have learnt some tips to help them with this. Knowing the Main Idea of a text shows you know what the text is mostly about. Grade Twos will finish their storybook study of "Zoo" by Anthony Browne this week. Children have learnt some new vocab: masses, snarl and impersonation. They have written their own sentences using these words. Lastly, Grade Twos will write a reflection about their trip to Scienceworks after their visit on Wednesday.

Grade Preps have been completing activities involving grouping and sharing and have been practising subitising to identify group size. They have been making groups of objects according to a given number, making groups of different sizes and making equal groups. They have also been doing some addition of numbers.
Gr 1
Grade Ones have been focusing on Pattern work when skip counting. They have been working on the Unit of Multiplication and Division and have been organising collections into 2s, 5s and 10s. Grade Ones have been making arrays and creating growing patterns of 2s, 5s and 10s (decreasing).
Gr 2
Grade Twos have completed their unit on 'Shape'. They identified attributes of 2D shapes and the properties of 3D shapes. They counted faces, surfaces, vertices and edges. They have learnt some of the names of 2D and 3D shapes. Grade Twos are now working on the topic of 'Operations' with a focus on 'Bar Models' (whole, part, part) to solve addition and subtraction operations.
Gr 3 and 4
In Literacy, students are learning to use their knowledge of text structures to navigate texts and locate specific information, research and summarise information from multiple sources to plan their writing, identify the purpose and structure of a written argument, and plan a body paragraph for a persuasive letter that includes a clear point of argument, supporting details and evidence. At the end of this unit, students will have written a persuasive piece of writing.
In Maths, students have been developing their skills in combining and splitting 2D shapes, creating and multiplying polygons, and solving subtraction problems. They have also been learning to partition numbers up to two decimal places and represent numbers in both standard and expanded form. These activities have helped students strengthen their mathematical understanding, problem-solving skills, and confidence when working with numbers and shapes.
In Science, students are learning to understand how gases can be dangerous and how to stay safe around them. Students are also investigating how heating a gas can change its volume
Gr 5 and 6
In Maths, the Grade 5 students have been learning about angles, and in particular measuring and drawing angles. This, they will move onto learning about decimals.
The Grade 6 students have been learning about measurement and also transformation and location. Students have been learning how to read coordinates on a cartesian plane, and how to transform shapes.
In English, the Grade 5 students have this week started their new novel called ‘The Grandest Bookshop in the World’ by Amelia Mellor.
This book is centred around Pearl and Vally (Valentine) Cole who live in Cole’s Book Arcade in Melbourne. It is 1893 and it is the grandest bookshop in the world, run by their eccentric father and filled with curiosities and delights.
Pearl meets a mysterious Obscurosmith and realises that her father has risked both his life and the Arcade in a deal to bring her dead sister, Ruby, back to life. To save the father and Arcade that they love so much, Pearl and Vally embark on a game. They must defeat seven challenges set by the Obscurosmith by midnight or lose their father, the Arcade and their memories. Each challenge takes place in a different part of the Arcade and comes with its own risk; they must use all their wits and cleverness to solve the riddles and puzzles and outsmart the tricks.
During this unit, students will be writing a narrative.
In Grade 6, we have been reading our book called ‘Can you see me?’. This book follows the story of Tally, an 11-year-old girl with autism who is navigating the challenging landscape of starting high school. Tally faces numerous obstacles as she tries to fit in, make friends, and communicate her thoughts and feelings to those around her. The novel beautifully explores the world through Tally's unique perspective, shedding light on the daily struggles and triumphs of a young girl with autism. As Tally learns to cope with her differences and embrace her own voice, Can You See Me? delivers a powerful message of understanding, acceptance, and the importance of empathy in our society.
During this unit, students have been writing a persuasive letter about why we should have a therapy dog at school.
In Science, The Grade 5’s are studying ‘Natural Disasters’, and the Grade 6’s have started a new topic all about ‘Electrical Circuits’.
During humanities, the Grade 5’s have continued their unit called ‘Changing Communities’ and the Grade 6’s have continued their unit all about ‘Federation’.
