Years 3 - 5

Welcome to Term 3. We have had a positive start to the term, spending time revisiting our classroom expectations and routines, and refreshing our understanding of our school Red Gum values.
In English, we have begun our class novel Charlotte’s Web. Students have been exploring the themes and characters within the story, and have already made strong text-to-self connections. Many students have enjoyed relating the events in the book to their own experiences and knowledge of farm life.
In Humanities, we are exploring the geography of Australia. We began by investigating the seas that surround Australia and discussing why Australia is both an island and a continent. Students have also been learning about the states and territories and their capitals, including completing a hands-on jigsaw activity where they assembled and labelled a map of Australia.
In Science, our focus is on heat and energy. To introduce this topic, we explored different ways heat can be produced. Students were fascinated to learn how humans and animals can be detected in the dark using a thermal camera, leading to discussions about how infrared heat energy can be captured and represented.
In Art, we are developing our watercolour techniques. Students are focusing on creating light and airy pieces by using less pigment and carefully controlling the amount of water. We are also exploring size and scale, particularly how artists show foreground and background to create depth in their work.
