Careers and Pathways

Once again, the Mazenod Careers Expo has been a resounding success. The Discover Tomorrow Careers Expo has firmly established itself as a key feature of the Mazenod College calendar, providing a unique and valuable opportunity for students to engage with careers and pathways information drawn from both the wider Mazenod community and leading education and employment providers.
On Friday 8 May, more than 750 students from Years 10, 11 and 12 attended the Expo, gaining vital insights into their future career possibilities at a critical point in their secondary education. Students had direct access to representatives from 35 institutions, including universities, TAFE providers and key local and national employers. This breadth of representation ensured students were exposed to a wide range of post‑school options and realistic pathway advice.
A defining strength of the Discover Tomorrow Expo is the involvement of Mazenod College Alumni and past students, who generously took time out of their busy professional lives to speak with current students about their personal career journeys. Their presence added an authentic and relatable dimension to the event, reinforcing the message that career pathways are rarely linear and that success can take many forms.
In addition to the Expo stalls, students were able to attend a series of concurrent seminars, which allowed for deeper exploration of specific industries and pathways.
One highly attended session focused on the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Recruitment process, providing students with a clear overview of career opportunities across the Navy, Army and Air Force, application requirements, training pathways and long‑term career prospects.
Students interested in the sports industry benefited from an engaging seminar on Careers in sport, delivered by representatives from Swinburne University of Technology, Deakin University and Richmond Institute. This session highlighted the diverse range of roles available beyond elite competition, including sports science, exercise physiology, coaching, management and industry-linked study pathways.
A standout highlight of the day was the Mazenod College Alumni Q&A Panel, where past students shared honest reflections on their journeys since graduating from the College. The panel offered invaluable insight into university study, apprenticeships, workforce entry, career changes and the importance of resilience, adaptability and continued learning. Students responded very positively to the openness and authenticity of the discussion.
The timing of the Expo was particularly significant.
Year 10 students are preparing to select their VCE programs next term and are currently involved in Morrisby debrief counselling further preparing their future career action plans.
Year 11 students are refining and confirming their career directions within the VCE & VCE Vocational Major.
Year 12 students are making crucial decisions regarding further study and employment beyond their Mazenod education and are preparing for the application stage of their career development plans.
Events such as Discover Tomorrow play a vital role in supporting students through these important decisions.
“The Discover Tomorrow Careers Expo gives our students clarity, confidence and real‑world perspective at a crucial stage of their schooling. The value of students engaging directly with educators, employers and alumni cannot be overstated.”
Finally, the Careers Team would like to sincerely thank the College Maintenance and Information Technology departments for their crucial support in ensuring the Expo ran so smoothly. We also acknowledge the contribution of events and administrative staff and thank Dr Paul Shannon and the College Leadership Team for their continued support of the Mazenod Careers and Pathways program.
