Warburton East Juniors

Data Detectives!
Students at Warburton East have been learning to collect, record and make simple inferences based on yes or no questions. Yes or no questions offer an efficient method for gathering information and an introduction into data concepts. Last week, we practised using a person’s name before asking a closed-ended question and showing gratitude for their participation. For example: “Aspen, do you have a sandwich in your lunchbox today?”, Aspen responds, then “thank you for participating, or thank you for answering my question”.
Students also completed an ‘Ask and Tally’ activity, constructing their own closed-ended question that requires a yes or no response. With the collected information, students were able to construct a bar graph and answer related questions. For example: How many people have been on an aeroplane? What was the least popular response? How many people answered your question in total? What is the difference between your responses?
Example questions used in the ‘Ask and Tally’ activity below:
Mia: “Do you like pizza?“
Brodie: “Do you brush your teeth in the morning?“
Prep: “Do you like the beach?“
Prep: “Do you like icy-poles?”
Dekota: “Do you like ice-cream?”
Braxton: “Do you like dinosaurs?”
Mac: “Do you like penguins?”
Tyson: “Do you have a fear of spiders?”
Aspen: “Do you like animals?”
Kyrro: “Do you play sports?“
Our data analysis showed, liking pizza was a favourable response.
Wishing our Warburton East junior students a fantastic, fun-filled school holiday! I look forward to seeing you back at school on Monday 5th October.
