Level 3 & 4

Information
NAPLAN continues for Grade 3 students this week with Language Conventions on Tuesday morning and Mathematics on Thursday morning, which will complete the assessment schedule. Both of these tests are online, so please ensure your child brings their fully charged iPad and headphones to school.
To help set students up for success, it is ideal that they come to school well rested and bring a water bottle with them. Students will be eating before and after each assessment, so they may also like to bring a little extra food in their lunchbox.
Thank you for your support in helping students feel prepared and confident during the assessments.
Grade 3 Camp, we will be holding a camp information session on Wednesday 25th of March from 4:00-4:30 on Zoom. Please join us online to find out more camp details, a zoom link will be sent out closer to the date.
A reminder that the final payment for camp of $150 is due on Thursday 1st of April.
CBL
Students will consider what they can contribute to a community and how they benefit from belonging. They will reflect on the different communities they are part of and explore the small actions they can take to enrich the Wonga Park Primary School community, as well as other communities they belong to, such as sporting teams, clubs or neighbourhood groups.
To support your child at home, you could talk with them about communities they belong to and the ways people contribute to make them positive places. Encourage them to think about small acts that help others, such as including someone in a game, helping a teammate, or showing kindness to a neighbour. Discuss how being part of a community can make people feel connected, supported and valued.
Reading
This week our mentor text is Lucas’ Football Community, along with a class poem we have created about Wonga Park Primary School. Students will practise a range of reading skills including note taking, the comprehension strategy of visualisation, word building, and exploring synonyms to expand their vocabulary and deepen their understanding of texts.
To support your child at home, when reading with your child, encourage them to close their eyes and describe what they are imagining as they listen to the story. You can also ask them to think of different words with similar meanings (synonyms) for words they encounter in the text. This helps strengthen comprehension and build vocabulary.
Writing
We will be beginning a unit on poetry, using our Wonga Park Primary School community poem as a mentor text. Students will explore word play, syllabification, word choice, rhyme and rhythm to understand how poets create meaning and sound in their writing. Using these skills, students will create their own poems following an AABB rhyme structure.
To support your child at home, please encourage your child to listen for rhyming words in songs, books or poems. You could play a simple rhyming game by taking turns thinking of words that rhyme (for example: play, day, say). This helps children develop an understanding of rhythm and rhyme in poetry.
Maths
Following NAPLAN on Thursday, students in Grade 3 will be beginning addition and subtraction. Students in grade 4 are spending more time on ‘time’.
To support your child at home, please encourage your child to practise maths in everyday situations. For example, ask them to help add prices while shopping, work out change, or calculate how much time has passed between activities during the day. These real-life examples help strengthen their understanding of maths concepts.
