St Ignatius of Loyola (July 31)

Yesterday, the Catholic Church celebrated the feast of St Ignatius of Loyola. Once a brave soldier, he was seriously injured by a cannonball in battle, ending his military career. During his long recovery from a broken leg, he spent his time reading about the life of Christ. This period of reflection led him to a deep spiritual conversion.

Inspired by what he read, Ignatius chose to give up his wealth and noble status to live a humble life. He spent time in a cave outside of town, where he reflected deeply and began writing about his inner spiritual experiences. These writings later became the Spiritual Exercises, a guide for spiritual growth still used today.

St Ignatius underwent an extraordinary transformation - from a self-focused nobleman to a saint devoted to God and the service of others. He is the patron saint of education, retreats, soldiers, and the Society of Jesus.

St Ignatius. Pray for us.
