19 May 2026- BE MINDFUL OF YOUNG PEOPLE ON ROADS

Young drivers are a vital part of our community, but they remain overrepresented in crashes on New South Wales roads. This makes it more important than ever for all motorists to take extra care and responsibility behind the wheel.

Simple actions can make a big difference. Slowing down in school zones helps protect children during some of the busiest and most unpredictable times of day. These areas are clearly marked, and reduced speed limits are there for a reason — to give drivers more time to react and keep young pedestrians safe.

Patience is equally important when sharing the road with learner and provisional drivers. These drivers are still building experience and confidence, and they may take longer to make decisions or react to changing conditions. Giving them space, avoiding aggressive driving, and allowing extra time can help prevent unnecessary pressure and reduce the risk of mistakes.

Council Road Safety Officer, Sean Herrett believes that road safety is a shared responsibility. “By staying alert, respecting speed limits, and showing consideration to younger drivers, we can all contribute to safer roads across NSW. A moment of patience could make a lifetime of difference.”, Mr Herrett says.
