Sharing Our Passion for Reading

At Greenhills, we are passionate about reading because it is the foundation of lifelong learning. Reading opens doors to knowledge, sparks imagination, builds vocabulary, and develops critical thinking skills. One of the most important things you can do to support your child's learning is to read to them and with them regularly at home. These shared reading experiences strengthen literacy skills, build confidence, and foster a lifelong love of books.

Tips for Successful Home Reading

• Create a Reading Routine: Set aside time each day for reading and encourage your child to record their reading in their diary.
• Choose Appropriate Books: Select books that match your child's reading level while encouraging them to explore a variety of genres and topics.
• Be a Reading Role Model: Let your child see you reading and sharing your enjoyment of books.
• Support and Encourage: Celebrate effort and progress, and provide guidance when challenges arise.
• Promote Independence: As confidence grows, encourage your child to choose books that interest them and explore topics they enjoy.

Talking about stories is a simple but powerful way to show your child that reading is valued. Meaningful conversations help deepen comprehension, encourage critical thinking, and make reading more enjoyable.

Here are some questions you might like to use at home:

Before Reading

• What do you think this book will be about?
• What clues do the title or cover give you?
• What do you already know about this topic?

During Reading

• What has happened so far?
• What problem or challenge is the character facing?
• Why do you think the character made that choice?

After Reading

• What was your favourite part and why?
• Did the story end as you expected?
• What message do you think the author wanted to share?
• How did the characters change throughout the story?
• How does this story connect to your own life?

Reading at home is one of the most powerful ways to support your child's learning. It develops literacy skills, strengthens the connection between home and school, and nurtures a love of reading that can last a lifetime.

We are excited to celebrate Book Week on Tuesday, 25 August, with this year's inspiring theme, Symphony of Stories.   Book Week is always a highlight of the year at Greenhills, providing students with the opportunity to celebrate the joy of reading, creativity, and storytelling. We are currently planning a range of exciting mixed-age activities, including our much-anticipated Book Week Parade, to bring this wonderful theme to life.  We look forward to sharing this special occasion with our school community and celebrating the power of stories together.
