Performing Arts

This term in Performing Arts we have been looking at music. All of the students have enjoyed learning about the elements of music and playing a variety of different instruments.
Foundation
In Foundation we have been identifying where we hear music in the environment and discussed personal musical experiences and preferences. We have explored pitch, beat, rhythm and tempo. The students have enjoyed playing body percussion, and exploring the use of percussion instruments and drums.
Year 1
In Year 1, the students have been exploring what music is and how music can be created and shared. They have experimented with rhythm, instruments, improvisation and simple composition. Students have created their own short pieces of music and are now rehearsing and preparing to perform their compositions for an audience.
Year 2
In Year 2 we have been identifying instruments and exploring how they sound different. We have defined and learnt about beat, rhythm, melody and harmony and how to incorporate these elements into our songs. They have been composing a song in small groups and have been working on their ability to collaborate and record their musical thinking.
Year 3
In Year 3, the students are developing their understanding of music elements and composition. They have created and performed music, explored how to improve their compositions, and learned how to give and receive constructive peer feedback. Students are now using feedback to refine and rehearse their compositions in preparation for performance.
Year 4
In Year 4 students have been exploring rhythm, creating melodic lines, applying harmony to compositions and describing how these elements all come together. They have explored music from different cultures and shared their own experiences with cultural music. Students have been creating an original piece, preparing their song for performance and will present their compositions to an audience.
Year 5/6
In Year 5/6, students are exploring music, culture and cultural identity, including how music can help maintain and revitalise cultural traditions. They have investigated cultural music examples and considered the role of music in communities. Students have also been developing group music projects, using their understanding of culture, musical elements and composition to refine their work for performance.
