Student Learning Term

Year 3 in Term 3

We’ve had a very pleasing start to the term in Year 3, with many exciting learning opportunities. Students have embraced these experiences and are rising to the challenge.

In Reading, we have explored a range of rich mentor texts and used different comprehension strategies to guide our learning. Our focus texts so far, Three, The Great Bear, Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge, I’m Not Missing and Zoo have provided opportunities for students to analyse text features, make meaningful connections, make inferences about the text and the theme of the book, while also summarising key ideas.

“I liked learning how to infer because we were able to learn more about the text and the characters, including the messages and themes. My favourite book that we read was ‘Three’ because he found a new home” - Eloise (3D)

In Writing, students have worked hard across the term crafting a realistic fiction piece, and they have just published their pieces.

"I like how we used our imaginations to create our stories. Mine was about an astronaut in space" Matilda (3C)

In Numeracy, students have been applying their understanding of probability. We played Greedy Pig, Heads or Tails and Four Corners to support their understanding.

“My favourite part was doing the probability line, using certain, likely, unlikely and impossible” - Alarah (3A)

“It was fun trying to guess the chances of things happening” - Ryan (3A)

Kinder Visits

To support our community connections, the Year 3 cohort visited the Lucas YMCA Kindergarten in week 6 and 7. The Year 3 students brought their favourite picture book to read with a buddy at the kindergarten.

“I liked reading the book with my kinder buddy” - Ali (3A)

“I liked how they took me around to their favourite things; it was like being a little parent.” - Prithvik (3A)

“I liked watching the change between liquid and solids through the use of shaving foam and air.”- Jimmy

“I liked using friction to make fire by pressing air into a tube really fast.” - Jaxon

“I enjoyed using force and a net to fling a ball high into the air.”- Ayla

“I liked making the circuits work. I do these at home too. I know a lot about these.” - Nelvin

“I learned about things that move and force. I got to look into a microscope at small things.” -Summer

“It was fun seeing all the materials that react. I didn’t want to leave.”- Derek

“I liked the microscope the best. I saw new things I had never seen before.”-Sienna
