Flourish with Fluency

Our new volunteer-led initiative at RNPS, ‘Flourish with Fluency’ (FwF) has successfully kicked off this week. We are very excited to see how this program supports our students and how it also allows members of our community to positively contribute to the learning program at our school.
‘Flourish with Fluency’ is a new RNPS initiative designed to provide targeted support for selected students. The FwF format has been developed here at RNPS incorporating some newly created resources and other reliable resources already in use at the school. Through FwF students are provided with additional individualised opportunities to practise their literacy and/or numeracy fluency through two or three 15-minute sessions per week. Sessions run across the week at the beginning or end of the day and are designed to provide additional practice to help students succeed in their regular literacy and numeracy lessons while building fluency and confidence in their foundational skills. The program is currently being run in Grades 4 - 6.
Last week, we had a fabulous turnout for our FwF training sessions, where our volunteers were introduced to the ‘Flourish with Fluency’ format, which provides step-by-step resources that take students through some reading fluency practice and/or number fact fluency practice. Volunteers provide students with some prompts and feedback to support them in improving their fluency.
Community volunteers at our training sessions included mums, dads, older siblings and grandparents. We were impressed with the interest and engagement shown by this large and varied group of our community members from various fields and backgrounds.
At any age, learning something new and then having a go at it independently can feel quite daunting. We commend our community volunteers on their openness and resilience in giving FwF a try with us. We look forward to tracking the program’s impact and tweaking it to make it better for our students and volunteers alike.
