From the Grade 3/4 Zoo Excursion

Last Thursday, 23rd April, all the Grade 3/4 students went on an exciting trip to the Melbourne Zoo. It was a big day full of fun, learning, and adventure!

We took part in a STEM workshop where we learned about enrichment activities for zoo animals. These are special activities that help keep animals busy, active, and happy. We even got to investigate different ideas and create our own enrichment activities, which was really interesting.

After the workshop, we explored the zoo and saw many amazing animals. One of the highlights was visiting the gorillas. We looked carefully to see if we could spot Ivan, just like the character from our novel study The One and Only Ivan. It was exciting to make that connection to our learning in class. We also got to see the dinosaurs that had “arrived” at the zoo, which made the day even more fun and unique!

It was a busy, action-filled day with lots of exploring, learning, and laughter. Everyone had a fantastic time and made great memories together.

Some highlights from the day were:

"I enjoyed listening to the information about the animals." From Ella Ryan. 3/4S

"I liked how organised the zoo was, which meant the animals had a lot of space to play, eat and sleep. My favourite animals were the spider monkeys." From Thea Malbroukou. 3/4S

After our exciting visit to the zoo, the Grade 3/4 students used their experience to write their own similes. We have been learning all about similes in our writing. A simile is when you compare two unlike things using the words like or as. The students used what they saw, heard and felt at the zoo to create fun and imaginative comparisons. Their writing helped bring their memories to life and made their descriptions more interesting for the reader!
