Years 9 &10

Synergy

As part of our Future Me unit in Synergy, our Year 9 students have been developing essential life skills designed to support them in gaining employment, making informed financial decisions and thinking critically about their use of generative AI.

A key focus of the unit has been job readiness, which is particularly timely as many students begin seeking their first jobs.  Students have been learning how to search for jobs and write effective résumés and cover letters.  They have also been practising interview skills which they will apply later this year when they participate in mock interviews with local employers at Fitzroy Town Hall as part of the Real Industry Job Interviews Program.

The Year 9s have also strengthened their financial literacy through two workshops facilitated by Talk Money with Ecstra Foundation.  These sessions focused on different ways to earn money, how to read payslips and the role of superannuation.  This learning has been extended in the classroom through activities exploring how savings accounts and compound interest work.

To conclude our Future Me unit, students have examined the impact of artificial intelligence on our society.  They are currently preparing for their Socratic Circle discussion exploring big questions such as, ‘Is AI detrimental to learning?’ and ‘What are the ethical concerns surrounding AI?’   We look forward to hearing their perspectives on this topic when they share their findings in class next week.

Well done to 9 MacKillop and 9 Barak for their enthusiasm to develop the skills needed to navigate the world of work and make informed decisions about their futures.
